Stress and YOUR Health and YOUR Death!
The body is amazing. This internal emergency response system called the ‘stress processes evolved from our need as humans to respond to physical challenges and environmental demands like… “Lions and tigers and bears!” Which really threatened survival. In today’s society, challenges and demands are more likely related to; interpersonal relationships, having a toxic job, technology, time constraints and real or perceived lack of control in our lives.
How we think about the stress has its roots and origins in ancient Asian and Greek view of health and disease— Concepts of harmony and balance. It’s also about energy. The central concept of the body’s response to stress is the concept of shifting energy from long term use, that is just ‘staying alive’ to a more urgent demand – the possibility of running away, quick decision making or avoiding hitting a deer in the road.
The fact is, biological and emotional responses to stress are necessary and healthy. Stress is inevitable. We are born equipped with an automatic internal emergency response system that is perfectly designed to protect and assist in settings of acute demands and challenges.
Only when demands and challenges are prolonged, chronic, or unrelenting that the body experiences ‘wear and tear’ on the body. The body struggles to stay in balance and in the process there is a consequence—a very harmful bin burden and consequence I refer to as StressHealth Load™
StressHealth Load puts you at risk for multiple problems:
- Heart Attack
- Poor Concentration
- Irritable Bowel Disease
- Flares of Asthma and Allergic Reactions
What is your StressHealth Load? What is your risk for illness, disease, premature disability or premature death because of stress? We often think we know what to do to, stay healthy, and achieve and maintain work life balance. But there is a difference between knowing and doing.
